Josephina Melhado Elsas was married to Salomon Melhado. The couple had four children of which only one survived the war. Before the war Josephina Melhado sold sour and sweet pickles of a barrow in the old Jewish quarter of Rotterdam.
Untill 14 May 1940 the family Meljado lived in the Helmerstaat in Rotterdam. As a consequence of the bombardement of Rotterdam the family moved into the house of a daughter.
