Hermann van der Walde came to the Netherlands from Emden (East Frisia in Germany, close to the Dutch border) in march 1939. His mother was related to the wife of chief rabbi Simon Dasberg. Hermann van der Walde stayed for a while with the Dasberg family in Groningen.
