A former pupil and friend of Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita, M.C. Escher, in an interview for Vrij Nederland given in 1968, told the journalist Bibeb that the Jessurun de Mesquita family had refused to go into hiding. The family assumed that their almost aristocratic origins would protect them. The son, Jacob, believed that he had obtained sufficient assurances of their safety from the organizations concerned.
