Joseph Spijer was a son of Elkan Spijer and Rachel Rubens. He married Louise Wallega from Hoorn in Amsterdam on 12 June 1912. She was a daughter of Isaac Wallega and Rachel Rubens. The couple had three children: Elkan, Henriette and Jacob.
