Samuel Henriquez de Granada was the descendant of Spanish-Portuguese Jews who sought refuge in Suriname in the 17th century after escaping the Spanish Inquisition. He became the District Commissioner of the district of Lower Commewijne (Suriname) in 1909. In Commewijne he met a woman with whom he had a daughter, some of whose greatgrandchildren live in Israel. As the most veteran of district commissioners he was appointed acting Agent-General of Immigration on June 11, 1921. In May 1922 De Granada became a member of the Board of Directors of Suriname and in December 1924 he was officially appointed Agent-General of Immigration. In August 1925 De Granada took leave and went to the Netherlands. He never returned to Suriname.
