Benno Harrij van Esso was a son of Jacob van Esso who was a sold bags in Meppel. Because the family was well known in Meppel, Benno van Esso left to live in Amsterdam during the war. Shortly after his arrival in Amsterdam he was arrested and deported.

Benno had two sisters and two brothers, who, as far as is known, all survived the war. Benno was married to Elsa Emma Cohen. Together, they left for Amsterdam during the war. The complete Van Esso family was hiding at the address Prinsenstraat 3.

The mayor of Meppel requested that Benno Harrij van Esso, a merchant residing at 67-bis Zuideinde in Meppel, be located, detained and brought to trial. He had changed his place of residence without the required authorization. This description referred to Jews who had gone into hiding.
