The Philips family moved from Steenderen to Doetinchem around 1924, where they continued their shop in a building in the Hamburgerstraat. From 1930 onwards, the family lived in a house at 27, Wilhelminastraat. Jacob and his wife had two children. One child, Johan, still lived at home.
Jacob Philips owned the estate "De Kervel" near Hengelo (Gld.), where some Jews were in hiding during the war. According to a relative, Jacob himself did not consider going into hiding, even though he was offered a hiding place.
At the end of October 1942 Jacob and Johan were captured in their house during a raid. Jacob's wife acted so well that she was hospitalised and managed to escape to the hiding address of the family of her child in Groningen. They survived the war.
