Joël Roet and Grietje Wurms married in 1914 in Amsterdam. They had two more children who did not live at home anymore: Leendert and Philip.

During the war the surviving child from this family was released from a Dutch labour camp to provide for his blind father and the rest of the family. When the family was taken away he jumped out of a second story window and went into hiding.
