The Odewald family ran a kosher hotel in Groningen, Hotel Odewald. The Jewish youth paper of 16 February 1933 states that the rabbis De Hond and Sadberg ate at Hotel Odewald.
The father, Philip Odewald, had died before the war. He had drowned in the Verbindingskanaal, Groningen, in 1936. Heiman Odewald, known as Hein, had taken over the hotel from his father. He was also the secretary of the social committee of Betsaleel club, Groningen. During the war, Hein and his mother were registered as cooks.
