Benjamin de Vries was the son of Barend de Vries and Eva Naitwitter. In 1923 he got married to Eva Samson, the daughter of Hona Samson and Henna Frank. The couple worked in Amsterdam as 'father and mother' of the Nederlands-Israëlitisch Oude Mannen- en Vrouwenhuis (Dutch-Jewish home for elderly men and women).
On 13 August 1943, when their home was evacuated by German troops, Benjamin and Eva fled and went into hiding. Five days later their location was betrayed and they were taken to Westerbork by way of the Hollandsche Schouwburg.
