In 1941 Meppen, in the province of Drente, was part of the town of Zweeloo, which had 2,222 inhabitants. Two Jews lived in Meppen: Meijer Kats and his unmarried sister Rosetta. They ran a haberdashery from their home. They displayed their wares on the shelves in their large kitchen. Meijer peddled his wares from a dogcart. He traded rags and skins as well. Rosetta minded the shop and kept house.
Meijer was an amateur musician. The other villagers heard him play his accordion in front of his house on Shabbat afternoons in the summertime. Meijer and Rosetta were members of the Jewish Community in Emmen. On 9 March 1943 they were fetched by the constabulary and taken to Westerbork on a motorcycle with a sidecar. From there they were deported to Sobibor.
