The family Vecht lived at 8 Buitenrustplein in Voorburg. There were three sons. Two sons, Alfred Frits and Henri attended the higher secondary school. The third one was a late arrival, Joost Edward nicknamed Joosje.
A neighbour of the family Vecht wrote about their departure: 'I remember the day they left, only because when I looked in the pram, Joosje was not in it yet and at the head end there were piles of nappies and clothes. I thought it so strange, because I was six years at the time and thought it was not necessary, all those nappies and clothes for a simple walk!'
