The Biermans were poor and pious. When father Jonas died in 1920, mother Eva was left behind with the children. The family lived in the Bente next to the windmill at first and later moved to the Hoofdstraat. David Jonas was a hunchback and was mentally disabled. He had a little organ, which he played to make a bit of money for the family.
