Carel van Gelder was the son of Wolter van Gelder and Jette Meijer. He married Sientje Mogendorff in Arnhem in 1900. She was the daughter of Michael Mogendorff and Zanetta Wertheim. The couple had two children: Henriette and Michel Wouter.
