Samuel Aardewerk and his family

Samuel Aardewerk was appointed cantor and teacher at the Jewish community of Alphen aan den Rijn on Sunday 22 March 1936. A few days later he married Bertha van der Hoek. The couple moved into the official residence at 10 Rijnkade in Alphen aan den Rijn. The president of the Jewish Community, Louis Nathan van Dien, officiated. He welcomed Samuel Aardewerk and his fiancée Bertha van der Hoek and presented the couple with an electric clock, a mirror and a tablecloth on behalf of the Jewish community. The next speakers were Chief Rabbi I. Maarsen, D. van Dien, chairman of the Lekach Tov Society (Aardewerk was appointed teacher of this society) and J. van der Wijk, who as governor of Teref Cholim encouraged Aardewerk to help the sick. Samuel Aardewerk and his wife were deported to Sobibor via Vught and Westerbork.
