Hijman Wittenburg was a son of Salomon Wittenburg and Eva van Lochem. He married Saartje Kropveld on 29 August 1928. Together they had three children. Saartje died in February 1933. Their son Emanuel Victor was brought to the Megadle Jethomiem (Educators of Orphans) in November 1933. The two other children stayed at home. Hijman Wittenburg married Eva van Geens in Oktober 1939.
