Jacob Swaalep, also known as Jaak, was diamond worker by profession. At the beginning of the war he was unemployed and was therefore sent to one of the Jewish labour camps in the east of the Netherlands. In June 1941 he fell ill. Being an amateur cyclist he cycled all the way back to Amsterdam. There he was taken to a hospital, where he died of meningitis. He is buried at the Jewish cemetery at Diemen.
Clara Swaalep-de Jong stayed behind with their three young children. She started doing voluntary work helping departing people at an office of the Jewish Counsil at the Afrikanerplein, which gained her a Sperre. At the end of June 1943 Clara Swaalep-de Jong and her children were taken from their home by two SD-men. They were deported through the Hollandsche Schouwburg and Westerbork.
