Jacob Levy van Baren was a son of Karel van Baren en Hester Meibergen. On December 27, 1897 he got married to Betje Marianna Kolthoff. She was a daughter of Benediktus Abraham Kolthoff and Martha Lezer. The couple had two children, of whom a son Carel Benedictus did not survive the war.
