Benedictus Premsela and his family

Benedictus Premsela studied medicine in Amsterdam, where he sat for his medical finals on 12 April 1913. He set up a practice in Assendelft. From 1918, he lived at 20 Diepenbrockstraat in Amsterdam where he also practised medicine (after 1940, at 796 Prinsengracht).

Benedictus Premsela became particularly famous through his work as a sexologist. In 1925, he started a Consultancy for the promotion of medical examinations before marriage and in 1931, he was the founding director of the Dr Aletta Jacobs-house, 'Clinic for sexology, marriage and birth control' in Amsterdam.

Premsela wrote numerous articles and monographs. In 1950, his work 'Sexual problems, marital and relationship problems in letters I received' was published posthumously. Benedictus Premsela was married. Their daughter Elly died in the war, while their two other children survived.

We have been unable to determine whether one or more members of this family survived the war. While their names do not appear on the lists of survivors, we have not been able to trace them in In Memoriam either. They are therefore labeled as 'surviving' and their names are not listed.

In addition, a Jokos file (number 553) on this family is at the Amsterdam Municipal Archive. Access is subject to authorization from the Stichting Joods Maatschappelijk Werk. The Jokos file reveals that a claim was lodged for compensation for valuables surrendered to the Lippmann-Rosenthal looting bank (L-claim, number 9721/6700).
