Mozes Richard Hakker and his family

Mozes Richard Hakker was the son of Philip Jacob Hakker(t) and Elizabeth Knap. Together with his family and his future son-in-law, Andries Davids, he tried to escape to Switzerland. With the help of a guild they passed the Dutch-Belgian border, aswell as the Belgian-French border. In the French town Nancy they would meet another guild who would lead them for the second part of their journey. There they were betrayed. By way of the camp Rivesaltes the family was sent to the Gurs concentration camp. The Dutch consulate in Lyon tried to protect the family. Non-the-less, in February 1943, the police force of the Vichy regime sent the men to the transit camp Drancy, and further to Sobibor. The women were set free.

A journal and several postcards written by Mozes Richard Hakker remain in the City Archive of Rotterdam in the collection 'Second World War' with collection numbers 2010-1045, 2011-1035 en 2012-77.
