Daniël Vrenkel and his family

Daniel Vrenkel (nicknamed Daantje) was a son of Mozes Vrenkel and Grietje de Jong. He got married in 1930 with Sara West. At the end of 1938, the couple left Ter Apel for Deventer. They had one daughter, Greta Vrenkel.

Together with his father and brother Heiman, Daniel ran the 'Veenkoloniale Zakkenhandel Fa. M. Vrenkel en Zonen' at the westside of the Hoofdstraat, a business dealing in bags, rags, old metals etc. The business did well. In the Jewish community life of Ter Apel, Daniel, his father and his brother Heiman occupied a prominent place.

Daniel, his wife and daughter went into hiding in Deventer. In the spring of 1943, he tried to find a hiding place in Wildervank. During that attempt, they were picked up by Dutch Nazi Policemen.
