Simon Valk and his family

Simon Valk was married to Rachel de Jong. They had five children: Jonas, Heijman, Gaaltje, Mozes Manus and Benjamin. The family lived in Gieten at the address A 258a. Simon Valk was a butcher. He mainly slaughtered sheep and goats. The meat was not only sold in their shop. Simon also sold door to door.

At the start of the Second World War, Jonas and Gaaltje had already left home. Heijman worked with baker Van Rhijn in the Brinkstraat in Gieten.
Simon Valk was the local representative of the Jewish Council. In the night of 2 to 3 October 1942, Simon Valk, his wife Rachel and their sons Heijman, Mozes Manus and Benjamin were taken in a lorry to Westerbork together with other Jews from Gieten.
