Paula Müller-Metz was born in Münster, NRW, on June 11, 1863,
the youngest child of Elias Metz and Rosalie Hartogensis.
Elias Metz, was a banker and about 1870 settled in Cologne.
Paula´s grandfather, Nathan Elias Metz, had been the first Jew,
after almost 200 years, to get permission 1810 to return to Münster.
Paula Metz married Emil Müller on 11 July 1886, in Cologne.
Emil Müller was a rich handkerchief manufacturer from Berlin.
They lived in a very beautiful house in the exclusive neighborhood of Dahlem, Berlin.
Paula and Emil Müller had 3 children : Elisabeth (Lizzie , my grandmother), Marie and Robert ( perished in Auschwitz,
January 1943).
Because of her dutch mother in 1939 Paula got permission
to move to Holland , hoping to escape from the Nazis.
Between 1939 and 1942 she had a lively correspondence with
her daughters, who had emigrated to England and to Brazil.
At first, her handwriting was firm and the paper and ink were of good quality. Later, around June 1940 there is a visible change.
Paula´s last letter (June 1942) was addressed to a family friend in
Zürich , who forwarded it to Rio de Janeiro.
