Hugo Mosbacher escaped from Germany and came to Holland to leave for America on the S.S. Verdun on May 11, 1940. Hitler's forces invaded on May 10, 1940 and no exit visas were allowed after the Nazi takeover. Hugo lived with relatives (Ari & Trude Knoller) for three years until he and his wife, Clemy were arrested and deported to Auschwitz.
They had been living in Amsterdam about two years at the time this photo was taken and sent to their daughter, Rosi Baczewski in New York. Rosi had left Germany in 1939 for London where she worked as a domestic until August, 1940 when she came to New York in hopes of meeting her parents there.
