Vesting Holland

The Dutch lines of defence were largely based on the old water-based defences that exploited natural barriers such as rivers and hills. There were important bastions on the Barrier Dam, near the hill known as the Grebbeberg, and on the Moerdijk bridge. The aim was to shield the country’s administrative centre from attack.
