Verhaal

Sonja Antoinette Frenk

How she was not saved by Switzerland

We have to avoid confusion between two persons:
Sonja Frenk, born 15 Aug 1920, a nurse, was deported to Auschwitz in 1942.
Sonja Antoinette (Antonetta) Frenk, born 11 May 1920 to Willem and Ester Engelina Block, a law student from Amsterdam, presumably is the friend helped and hidden by Hannie Schaft. She fled directly from the Netherlands to France in 1943, via Belgium, Roubaix, Paris, to Lyons. Helped by someone whom she paid 2000 francs, she entered Switzerland on October 19, 1943, but though she claimed to have evaded from a deportation train to Poland, she was not allowed to stay and brought back to the border on October 21. There she was immediately seized by the German border guards, jailed in Annemasse and sent 4 days later to Drancy. She was deported to Auschwitz in convoy No. 62, on November 2o, 1943.
