Going into hiding

Hiding from the Nazis.

People went into hiding at addresses that were not their registered residence. In some cases secret spaces or rooms were built to conceal the people in hiding. In other cases (especially with children) those in hiding were absorbed into their foster family. In such cases the individuals usually had forged identity papers. Whenever people in hiding were caught, they would be deported or shot on the spot. Those hiding them were often deported as well. In early 1943 about 25,000 Jews were in hiding. Thousands were betrayed or located by the Kolonne Henneicke and deported via the prison barracks at Camp Westerbork.
