Abraham Emden was a son of Joost Emden en Jansje Canes. This couple had eight children, of which seven did not survive the Holocaust: Fijtje, Benjamin, Mietje, Hijman, Clara en Vogeltje. Abraham married in Amsterdam on 22 Mei 1912 to Heintje Vuijsje and had eight children of which two daughters have died in childhood and the others, Joost, Marianna, Rebecca, Nico, Jenny and Louis did not survive the Holocaust.
