Werkdorp Wieringermeer

Agricultural training centre established for German refugees ages 18 to 24.

Werkdorp Wieringermeer opened near the village of Nieuwe Sluis in 1934. The settlement was recognized as a hakhsharah institution, which enabled the participants to emigrate to Palestine after their training.
In 1941 the Nazi forces of occupation closed the Werkdorp. Some of the residents were seized during a major raid in Amsterdam and deported to Mauthausen. Other former Werkdorp residents were involved in the resistance operations of the Westerweel group.
