Barend Koster was a son of Izaak Coster and Judit van Engers. He married Aaltje Aandagt in 1886 in Rotterdam. They had thirteen children, among whom Levie, Aäron, Betje, Hartog, Mozes, Jacob, three children who died in infancy and Michiel.
