Maurits de Bruin jr. took his own life. Cornelia de Lange wrote about him in the Nederlandsch Tijdschrift voor Geneeskunde: 'Fishing pearls during the routine of every day and then share those small treasures with intense joy with others, to let them participate in what had given him pleasure. That is how he led a consultancy for infants, doing this rather monotone but useful work for years. Afternoon after afternoon. He strongly believed in the purpose of his work and the mothers from the Jordaan area and in later years from the Westerpark area will not forget him in a hurry. Particularly dear to him was his work in the University Paediatric Clinic, where he carried out the role of Head for ten years after being assistant to Professor. J. de Bruin. To walk along the beds with students, to teach them to see, hear and feel is what he was so good at and many young doctors will remember him for it, as well as for the demonstrations on Thursday afternoons. To study an X-ray, to extract every possible detail from it and then to follow the patient's case clinically, taking into account the subtle points picked up during the physical examination, that is how he taught us the importance of atelectasis during numerous long processes. In general, an outstanding educationalist and a very committed doctor. Amsterdam's children are indebted to him. His memory deserves to be cherished.'
