Agudat Israel

Worldwide movement of Orthodox Jewry dedicated primarily to preserving religious norms.

One of the movement‘s guiding principles is the idea that the Jews are a religious community rather than a national unit. A Jewish state was therefore considered unnecessary. In the late 1930s, the increasingly real prospect of a Jewish state in what was Palestine at the time eventually led the Agudat Israel to prepare its members for emigration as well. In the Netherlands the movement established the hakhsharah centre Haimer‘s Esch.
