About David Buitenkant and his family

David Buitenkant, a flower peddler, was a son of Barend Buitenkant and Rebecca Haag. He married Judith van Bever in Amsterdam on 19 March 1922, a daughter of Samson van Bever and Sientje Smeer. The couple had eight children, of whom one son has survived the Holocaust. 7 November 1938, five of their children were sent to the Bergstichting in Laren: Jacob, Rebecca, Arie, Sientje and Samuel. They have been killed together on 21 May 1943 in Sobibor. David’s son Barend and daughter Mientje lived still at home with their parents at Weesperstraat 123 I in Amsterdam; Barend lost his life in the Extern kommando Hirschberg and Mientje was killed in Sobibor on 23 July 1943.

David's wife Judith passed away in Amsterdam on 2 October 1941 and was interred on 5 October 1941 in the Jewish Cemetery in Diemen, (Field C-Row 26-Grave 96). Under pressure of the circumstances, David Buitenkant took his own life on 8 September 1942 and has been interred six days later, on 14 September 1942 in the Jewish Cemetery in Diemen, (Field C- Row 32- Grave 95).
