Pogrom

Organised attack on Jews

During pogroms the Jewish inhabitants of a place or region were attacked. Jewish possessions were looted and the Jewish inhabitants were abused or even killed. From the Middle Ages until the twentieth century pogroms took place, especially when the local inhabitants needed a scapegoat for bad economical circumstances or diseases. The most famous pogroms are those that took place in nazi Germany, and in the former Soviet Union at the end of the nineteenth and first quarter of the twentieth century.
