Camp Westerbork Memorial Centre

By:

Centre near Hooghalen, Drenthe, built to commemorate Westerbork and the Jews, Sinti, Roma and resistance fighters who were transported east from this camp.

The memorial centre is a few miles away from the former location of Westerbork camp. In its exhibition hall, film images, replicas and drawings are used to tell the history of the camp and those interned there. Guided tours of the camp itself leave from the memorial centre. Little remains of its barracks. The memorials on the site itself include the National Westerbork Monument, in the form of a section of railway track that has been bent and twisted upwards, in front of a large buffer. On the site of the former roll-call yard is another monument consisting of 102,000 stones, in memory of all the Jews, Sinti, Roma and resistance fighters who were deported from Westerbork and murdered.
