Heijplaat refugee camp

By:

Camp for Jewish refugees on a sandbar near Pernis (Rotterdam)

Many German and Eastern European Jews fled to the port of Rotterdam in the 1930s, hoping to board a ship bound for a safer destination. These refugees were sheltered in an old quarantine centre on a sandbank named Heijplaat. The accommodation and facilities were very poor, and in 1939/1940 most of the refugees were transferred to the new refugee camp of Westerbork.
