Gerd Rolef was a son of Theo Rolef and Irene Mayer. In the 1930's he fled to the Netherlands, together with his two sisters. There he lived at the Nederlands Israëlitisch Jongensweeshuis (Dutch Jewish orphanage for boys), Megadle Jethomiem, in Amsterdam.
