Berend Polak, ook wel Bernhard genoemd, is de zoon van koopman Mozes Polak en Paulina Gans. De vader van Berend sterft voor de oorlog. De moeder van Berend is in het Diakonessenhuis in Utrecht ondergedoken, maar ze wordt opgepakt. In 1944 is zij in Auschwitz vermoord. Twee zussen en een broer van Berend Polak zullen de oorlog overleven.
