Elkan Sanders studied medicine in Amsterdam, where he sat for his medical finals on 3 July 1929. He specialised in Vienna in oral surgery. On 28 June 1933, he obtained his doctoral degree in Amsterdam on a thesis about 'Replantation and transplantation of teeth'.

Zij heeft via Westerbork en Theresienstadt de oorlog overleefd, en is getrouwd in 1950 met Alphons Lodewijk Diercks. Zij heeft twee zonen gekregen, Ronald Leo en Paul Gerard.
