Jews in the Netherlands before 1933

The first Jews to settle in the Netherlands came from Spain and Portugal and were known as Sephardi Jews. Following their expulsion during the Spanish Inquisition, they reached the Dutch Republic at the end of the 16th century. Around 1630 the first Ashkenazi Jews arrived here from Central and Eastern Europe after being driven from their homeland. Many more followed. From strangers they would become Dutch citizens.
