Salomon Frankenhuis, born 14 September 1904 in Enschede, was a son of Philip Frankenhuis and Jetje Woudstra. He was married to Rozette Wolf, a daughter of Mozes Wolf and Jansje Vrieslander. The couple lived in Engschede at Javastraat 102, where on 9 April 1941 their daughter Henriette was born.
At the time of the mandatory registration of all the Jews in Holland, his wife Rozette Wolf was “in an advanced state of pregnancy“. After the birth of her daughter, she worked however for the Jewish Council in Enschede at the department “Help to Departers”, but she had no exemption from deportation (Sperre). She just had a Jewish Council ID, B-1003 which was issued to her on 1 July 1942.
The Jewish Council registration cards of the Frankenhuis family do not provide clarity about dates of arrival in Westerbork; Rozette and her daughter Henriette have survived the Holocaust, presumably by going into hiding, but that cannot be read from notes on their registration cards of the Jewish Council. The absence of transport dates on their cards support the suspicion of hiding.
Also of Salomon Frankenhuis, it is not known when he was taken to Westerbork, nor whether he had been working as a forced labourer in a Jewish forced labour camp in Holland. Clear is dat he was put on transport from Westerbork to Auschwitz on 19 October 1942.
In Auschwitz Salomon Frankenhuis was selected as forced labourer and put to work in Monowitz, from where he wrote a letter home, which was received on 18 January 1943 in Enschede for R. Frankenhuis-Wolf at Javastraat 102.
In the spring of 1943, Salomon Frankenhuis eventually lost his life but the exact date and place is unknown. Therefore by order of the Enschede Chamber of the District Court of Almelo, the municipality of Enschede has drawn up a certificate of death for Salomon Frankenhuis, in which has been established that he has died in Auschwitz on 1 April 1943.
