Jacob Stern was staying in the Dommelhuis in Eindhoven, but he was not doing well. He had had a hard time in Germany, where he had even been to a concentration camp. In the Dommelhuis he complained about the food, about his sleep and many other things. He tried to commit suicide twice. After that he was admitted to Sanatorium Rustoord in Hilversum. This was on April 17th, 1939. In August of that year it was discovered that Jacob had "retentio orchitis", on which he was operated. In January 1941 he was moved to the A.C. Wertheim huis in Amsterdam because of the costs.
