Biography

About Jonas Rood, his wife Carolina Velmans and son Marcel.

Jonas Rood was a son of Meijer Rood and Naatje Schenkkan. He married 8 March 1939 in Amsterdam Carolina Velmans, a daughter of Nehemias Velmans and Rosetta Peperwortel. The couple had one son, Marcel, who was born on 12 September 1939.

Jonas Rood was a streetmarket vendor where he sold his clothing fabrics. He lived with his family in the Valkenburgerstraat 139 2nd floor in Amsterdam City Centre but moved 16 May 1941 to Eemstraat 16 2nd floor in Amsterdam-South.

The Jonas Rood family was taken to Westerbork on 29 May 1943 where they had to stay in barrack 64. A note on his registration card from the Jewish Council indicated the fact that Jonas had a Job with the Jewish Council Estafette, the messengers service between the various departments of the Jewish Council in the city.

However, this has not led to postponement or exemption of deportation. Already two days later, on 1 June 1943, Jonas, his wife Carolina and son Marcel were deported to Sobibor with more than 3000 other deportees and on arrival there they were all immediately killed on 4 June 1943.
