Biography

About Samuel Mullem.

Samuel Mullem, born 10 March 1904 in Amsterdam, was a son of Hartog Mullem and Sara Snoek. He married in Amsterdam 20 August 1924 to the 21-year old Matje Winnink from Amsterdam, a daughter of the actor Lion Winnink and Roosje Vreeland. The marriage however did not last and ended already after some years on 13 May 1927 in a divorce.

Samuel Mullem, just like his father, was a diamond polisher by trade. But Samuel was also a street market vendor: of fruit, of dry goods and haberdasheries and unregulated goods. He had a standing place at various street markets in Amsterdam, such as on Lindengracht, on Westermarkt and at Nieuwmarkt and sold his trade all days of the week.

During the twenties, Samuel lived at various addresses in Amsterdam, like in Tilanusstraat, on Haarlemmerdijk, in Amstelstaat and in Magerfonteinstraat. In 1934 Samuel left Amsterdam for Haarlem, from where he returned to Amsterdam in 1935. He also has resided in Zandvoort for some time but on 26 January 1939 he came back to Amsterdam and moved in with his father Hartog in Magerfonteinstraat 4 1st floor in Amsterdam, who had become already a widower since 1931. On 6 April 1940 Samuel moved to Louis Bothastraat 13 2nd floor which became also his last known address in Amsterdam.

Samuel Mullem was brought into Weserbork on 19 July 1942 and registered there 20 July. Not known is whether Samuel responded to a call for the so-called “provision of additional work in Germany”. However, he was put on transport on 24 July from Weserbork to Auschwitz, and on arrival there most likely selected to perform “labor”. The Jewish Council received a message about his death from Auschwitz which read: “Died in Auschwitz in the night of 12/13 August 1942 according list R643”.
