Biography

About Henderika Vos, her husband Hijman Arie de Leeuw and their children Jeanette and Mietje.

Henderika Vos, born in Coevorden on 27 August 1896, was a daughter of Joseph Vos and Mietje Bierman. She married there 11 December 1925 Hijman Arie de Leeuw from ‘s-Graveland, a son of Arie de Leeuw and Jeanette Henriette Hoek. The couple had two children, namely Jeanette, born 23 November 1926 and Mietje, born 24 November 1930.

Henderika’s spouse Hijman Arie de Leeuw was an official at the Jewish Congretation of Hilversum and lived there already at Zeedijk 28. After his marriage in 1925, his wife Henderika Vos moved over to Zeedijk 28 too, where their children were born and where they have resided till 15 April 1943; per that date they were registered in Amsterdam at the address Retiefstraat 15 2nd floor. One month later, on 25 May 1943, they were carried off with their children from there to Westerbork, where they had to stay in barrack 63.

The De Leeuw family however was exempted from deportation until further notice (“gesperrt bis auf weiteres”) because “of function”of Hijman Arie de Leeuw, who then was a debt collector at the Nederlands Israelitische Hoofdsynagoge (NIHS). But already one week later, on 1 June 1943, they were deported all to Sobibor and on arrival there on 4 June 1943 immediately killed.
