About Ephraim de Haas

Ephraim de Haas was a modest and small man who was limping slightly. In 1907 he joined the Rotterdam Chess Association. He was a talented chess player and good organizer. In 1926, Ephraim Haas was appointed as the chess correspondent for the Rotterdam area for the New Rotterdam Courant (NRC). In the same year he was elected to be the secretary of the Rotterdam Chess Association and remained so until September 1941 when he was discharged from this function under pressure of the occupying forces. He also was discharged as a Jew by the NRC. In August 1942 he had to work in work camp "The Vanenburg”. Two months later he was sent to Westerbork.
