Karel Martin Klein, carpenter by profession, was a son of bookkeeper Jacob Hessel Klein and Roosje Vos (deceased). He worked as assistant-gardener in the Apeldoornse Bos, where he began working on 4 May 1942. Eleonora Poppers, a domestic servant, was a daughter of the merchant Tobias Poppers and of Frederika Halberstad.
Karel Martin Klein and Eleonora Poppers married in Camp Westerbork on 18 February 1943.
The groom's father, Jacob Hessel Klein, was present at the wedding; he signed the marriage certificate.
