Jonas de Vries was a son of diamond worker Louis de Vries and of Hanna Blog. He worked as a qualified nurse in het Apeldoornse Bos, where he began working on August 8. Jonas de Vries got married to Anna Celine Korijn in Camp Westerbork on 24 April 1943. Anna Celine Korijn, a nurse by profession, was a daughter of Lodewijk Korijn and Debora van den Berg.
