A girlhood friend recalls, 'Mea Veffer was my friend and we lived next door to each other. Before the war, she went to the same school as I did. Later she had to go to a Jewish school.
The family was picked up in a truck and taken to the Hollandsche Schouwburg. For some reason, they came back a few days later. The second time they were picked up again. My sister and I raced after the truck on our bicycles. We were so angry. My mother had wanted to take in Mea and raise her as her own daughter. The Veffer family didn’t want that to happen. They wanted to stay together.’
