Barend Hartog Knap was the son of Levie Knap and Sara Bloemkooper. He married in 1910 in Rotterdam. The couple had two children. The wife and children of Barend Hartog Knap survived the war. Hester Teeboom-Knap was a sister of Barend Hartog.

Barend Hartog Knap committed suicide on 3 September 1940. In his suicide note, he wrote that he no longer saw any way out. It was clear to him that there was no more place for him as a Jew and that sooner or later they would arrest him.
